The Sword and the Spear

Synopsis

Astad Deboo is one of India’s foremost contemporary dancers. His
has been a life of travel and exploration, in a quest to create a style of
dance that bridges time and cultures. His ability to absorb different
influences and styles and create unique dance works has won critical
acclaim all over the world. Recently he has been collaborating with the Thang-ta martial arts performers from Manipur. The film, “The Sword and the Spear”, picks up the dance company on tour in Taiwan, explores the relationship between Astad and the Thang-ta dancers.

Dancing professionally since 1969, Astad has been trained in Kathak
and Kathakali, apart from training in London and the US in Modern
Dance. He has always been a keen observer and student of many forms of dance and theatre, spending time in Japan with Kabuki Theatre groups, and apprenticing with renowned dancers like Pina Bausch of Germany, among others. In India his has been a constant exploration with form and technique, and collaborations with as varied groups as from the Thang-ta martial artists to the hearing impaired students of schools all over India.

Astad Deboo will be in Bangalore for a Face-to-face, after the screening.
